Seeing students running in the halls with layers of sweatpants and sweatshirts signals the arrival of wrestling season. With the fall sports being done, the focus is now onto preparation for the next season. There is a lot more that goes into wrestling than people think. Wrestling is one of the most difficult sports, and as head coach Scott Snobl said, “In order to be a wrestler, it takes mental toughness, heart, desire, and a good work ethic.” Snobl took over previous head coach Art Meyer’s spot last year. Having experience wrestling in both high school and in college, Snobl has a lot to offer. Regarding why he is a coach, Snobl said, “My passion is to see when you’ve taught a kid something then you see them perform that either on the mat or on the field. Nothing is better than seeing a kid who has struggled achieve a victory and walk off the mat with a big smile on their face.” There are high hopes for the team this season with Snobl at charge, especially for captain, senior Brady Tweeton. Tweeton has competed at the varsity level since seventh grade and has the goal of being the state champion this year. To start off the season, Tweeton will be wrestling 152 to start and will end the year hopefully wrestling 145. Another strong individual wrestler is junior Jackson Poepping. Poepping has been on varsity for three years and will wrestle this year at 220. Regarding what it takes to wrestle, Poepping stated, “It takes dedication and grit. I hope that my hard work will pay off and I will win that state title.” The Trojans will take on Wadena-Deer Creek at home on Thursday, November 30th, in their first match. Everyone wishes the wrestling team the best of luck for this upcoming season, and as Tweeton said, “Remember to be the hammer, not the nail.”
