Junior high sports are usually a time for learning. Most teams play at the same level, but the seventh grade girls at Barnesville seem to be at a higher level than other teams that they play.

Many players have not yet played with each other when they get to the junior high level. Even though they are able to play on traveling teams when they are younger, they are usually split into several teams. Later, players have a tough time learning to play together when put on the same team. This year’s seventh grade girls had a different story. “The girls not only had great basketball skills but also great team skills. They played very well together,” said seventh grade coach Karen Solum. Solum has coached girls basketball since 1987. Fourteen of those years were varsity girls, and the rest have been junior high and junior varsity.

The team finished the season with a record of 15-1, only losing to Perham. Although they lost to Perham in the regular season, the girls were able to pull off beating them in their tournament to end the season. When seven grader Cora Sorenson was asked how she expected the season to go, she explained, “I expected it to go well. We had a lot of good players that worked well together.” Team chemistry is a very important part of success, but can be a tough thing to get.

Chemistry is gained by being with the team and enjoying each other’s company. It’s safe to say that the girls did enjoy each other and got along very well. When asked what her favorite part of this season was, seventh grader Kenzie Skogen answered, “I liked being with my coach and teammates.”

It’s obvious that the team has things to work on, but they are on the right track. Having success at a young age helps make the program become successful. Kids want to stay out and play rather than quit because winning is more fun than losing. It is no doubt that the Barnesville Lady Trojans will have several years of success to come.
